Nadur
Population: 5000
Nearby: Qala, Mgarr
Being one of the largest localities in Gozo situated on the easternmost hill of this small island, Nadur is a lofty, lookout plateau with a population of around 5000 people. The name of this village means “look out” which probably derived its name from its hilly position. It offered an excellent viewpoint to spot unfriendly ships. In fact, Nadur’s emblem shows the sun merging from blue seas with the motto “Vigilant” – watchful against danger.
Built in 1848, the Kenuna Tower which has been recently been restored and is now serving for communication services, served as a telegraph between Malta and Gozo. Being a watch house for the island, the village of Nadur has another marvellous tower; Ta’ Sopu Tower which lies half way through Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas. Therefore, danger was easily spotted and the alarm called.
Designed in 1766, the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a mix of baroque and 19th Century. The two most dominant features of this church are the dome and the façade which make it one of the most monumental churches in Gozo. Known locally as l-“Imnarja”, the religious feast of St. Peter and St. Paul is held on the 29th June. “Imnarja” is derived from luminaria (illumination) which is a festival rooted in maltese seasonal rituals and customs. One must note that this feast was very popular with honeymooners. Its name suggests the beginning of summer.
Nadur is also famous for its annual Carnival Celebrations which is also known as grotesque or Macabre Carnival. The spontaneity and creativity of this celebration attracts thousands of people; not only Maltese but also tourists. This unique experience has survived the times against all odds. One must note that this is the only traditional carnival celebration still held on the island which is not organised by any committee. Creatures wear humorous and grotesque masks inspired by current, local and international affairs.
