Qala
Population: 1600
Nearby: Nadur, Mgarr
Situated on the eastern-most point of Gozo, the village of Qala is the furthest from the Gozo’s capital. Its name originated both from the Arabic and Maltese which means ‘Bay’ or ‘Harbour’. Most probably, the nearby harbour of Mgarr was a great influence on this village’s name. this harbour theme is also reflected in the coat of arms of this village – a Gozo boat sailing on rough seas, having ‘In Tempestate Perfegium’(Haven from Storms), as its motto.
Built by Dun Guzepp Diacono, between 1882 and 1889, the parish church is dedicated to St. Joseph. Like many churches on this spectacular island, this church has a baroque style. The feast is held on the first weekend of August. One must note that this church faces the small island of Comino. It is said that when rough weather precluded a priest from going there, the Gozitans would follow mass from across the straits.
Opposite to the isle of Comino, lies the inlet Hondoq ir-Rummien (Gorge of Pomegranates) which can be acceded to, from this village. This magnificent small sandy beach with its crystalline water makes Hondoq Bay one of the most popular beaches in Gozo. This bay is not only ideal for swimming but has also been renowned for diving.
The historical remains of this village reflect defensive structures designed to deter enemy landings. In fact, the St. Anthony’s battery (1732) known also as it-Trunciera, is one of the Knight’s of Malta remains. Dating back to the prehistoric era, one can find cart ruts (parallel tracks cut into the rock), which extend over 180 meters. The best preserved windmills on the island, is also in Qala. This village coastline is a rocky trek in which nature and history offers a great deal.
